For the Month of DecemberCome join us for a delightful afternoon in our historic mansion fully decked out for Christmas. Tea and delicious foods will help get you into the holiday spirit. Enjoy our Afternoon Tea and take a tour of our historic mansion is one of the most delightful times of the year.Our special menu of two flavors of scones, three flavors of tea sandwiches and three flavors of petite desserts will be served with our special blends of loose-leaf tea.

Cancellation

You may cancel your reservation 2 days before your event. No shows will be charged the full amount of the tea. If weather causes a cancellation, there will be no charge.

Dietary Concerns

Due to the nature of Afternoon Tea, we are sorry, but we are not able to accommodate gluten-free, sugar free or dairy free diets for this event.

Tours

The Historic Mansion Tour is included as part of this event ticket. Our mansion will be dressed for the season. Each room has been selected by a special group to decorate. As you are touring, we encourage you to remember your favorite room. At the end of all tours during the month of December, we will be asking our tour guests to vote for their favorite room. The top 3 groups will win prizes for their efforts.

Located in our intimate Tea Room, Formal Dining Room, Parlor or Portico, Afternoon Tea includes two flavors of scones, three types of tea sandwiches and three types of petite sweets served on our antique tea china collection. A wide range of tea choices from our exclusive Belle Grove Plantation Afternoon Tea Blends are available for you to select from at the time of your arrival. Cost for Holiday Afternoon Tea and Tour in December is $40 per person, not including sales tax or gratuity.

Reservations are required 48 hours in advance. We are sorry, but we are not able to take walk-ins for Afternoon Tea.

Options to Create a Special Day

Afternoon Tea with a View

Our Afternoon Teas are served in our intimate Tea Room, Formal Dining Room or Parlor. But many have discovered the view from the Riverside Portico something to behold. We invite you to select our Riverside Portico. Views of the river and the many birds that play as you sip your tea makes for a memorable occasion at the plantation.

Afternoon Tea with a View – $45 per person including the Cost of your Afternoon Tea

Not Available October to February. If you schedule a tea on the Portico and the weather doesn’t permit it, we will move you inside before your arrival to make it more comfortable.

 

Tour of Historic Belle Grove’s Mansion

After your wonderful tea and delights, enjoy all that Belle Grove’s Mansion has to offer. This Guided Tour of our historic mansion will acquaint you with the history of the mansion as well as a view of our exquisite antiques and special collections. Tours are for 45 minutes to one hour, depending on the number of questions asked. This tour does require stairs, but we do have an elevator for those who wish to enjoy the ride up.

For 1:00pm reservations, you will be served Afternoon Tea first and then your tour will follow. For 2:30pm reservations, we ask that you arrive at 1:30pm for your Historic Mansion tour and then you will be served Afternoon Tea.

Enslaved Experience and History Tour

This special tour is dedicated to learning about our Enslaved Community and their experiences. Learn about life of house slaves, fields slaves and those that made the journey to America. See Slave related artifacts and learn about Belle Grove’s continued commitment to undercovering this history.

Tours start at 2pm Wednesday to Sunday. This tour is not available on Monday or Tuesday. This tour is 2 hours. We caution those who are easily offended or young children not to attend this tour due to the graphic natural of this subject.

We ask that you only select this tour if you are attending a 1:00pm Afternoon Tea reservation.

We do require a credit card to hold your reservation.

Due to the nature of Afternoon Teas, we are only able to accommodate limited dietary needs. We are sorry, but we are not able to accommodate Gluten Free, Diabetic or Dairy Free diets. When making your reservation, please let us know your dietary needs and we will let you know if we can accommodate it when we receive your request. On the day of your afternoon tea, any changes to the menu for needs not disclosed will not be possible.

Payment for afternoon tea is accepted after your tea by credit card or cash. We are sorry, but we do not accept personal checks.

You may cancel your reservation up to 3 days before the date of the tea. If you cancel 2 or less days, you will be responsible for a $35 cancellation fee.

If you cancel the day of your Afternoon Tea or do not show, you will be responsible for the full amount of your tea.

Nelly’s Berry Blush

Eleanor Rose Conway, better known as “Nelly” was born at Belle Grove in 1731. She would marry James Madison Sr. in 1749 and become the mother of our future forth President James Madison in 1751. This herbal tea with its bright berry and cream offers you a sweetness of flavors like the blush of a young girl’s first love. Caffeine Free and Herbal.

Mr. Turner’s Grey

This Earl Grey offering is a genteel grey just as Carolinus Turner was in 1839. This grey will surprise you with a creamy flavor as unique as Mr. Turner, Gentleman Farmer. Contains Caffeine.

Fannie’s Favorite Cranberry

Named for Fannie Hipkins-Bernard, the young girl Belle Grove’s current mansion was built for in 1791. This rich Cranberry Black Tea will delight your taste buds and warm your heart. Contains Caffeine.

Breakfast at Belle Grove

This English Breakfast blend from China offers Black Keemun Tea, rich in flavor. Its as warm and welcoming as a Belle Grove Plantation Breakfast Table. Contains Caffeine.

Lady in White

Name for our spectral Lady in White, this Jasmine Green and Black Tea blend will delight your taste buds with a ghostly hint of vanilla. Contains Caffeine.

Jemmy Madison’s Snap-Dragon

Snap-Dragon, a popular parlour game during the youth of James Madison was played by the children during Christmas Eve. Brandy is placed in a punch bowl with raisins and was set alight. Children would pluck the raisins out of the burning brandy at the risk of being burnt. This tea blends the taste of brandy and raisins in a black tea to bring back the joy of the colonial holidays. Contains Caffeine.

George Turner’s Mint Julep

During the 1800s, the Turner family would meet at Belle Grove every day at 5pm to share Mint Juleps. Story has it that one day, George Turner, only son of Carolinus Turner broke protocol of the time and decided to drink his before 5 o’clock. This scandalous brooch caused a disagreement that would see the family not speaking for 3 months. Now you can enjoy your Mint Julep tea as George did … before 5 o’clock. Caffeine Free and Herbal.

Eliza Cooling’s Orchard

Eliza Cooling was a small slave child at Belle Grove Plantation in the 1800s. During that time, an apple orchard stood near the slave quarters. We like to think that Eliza played in the orchard. To honor the memory of her and those who were enslaved at Belle Grove, we have created a special blend of apple, fig and cinnamon in black tea. Caffeine Free and Herbal.

Mrs. Hooker’s Lemonade Lavender Social

This tea is named in honor of Mary Hooker, a socialite in Chicago and Southern Debutante from Tennessee, who lived at Belle Grove from 1930 to 1981. Mrs. Hooker was known for her wonderful social gathering, including Lemonade Socials. This green tea blend with lemon and lavender flavors will enchant you as it recalls lazy days on the river’s bluff sipping lemonade. Contains Caffeine.

Port Conway Almond Pear

Port Conway was founded from the plantation of Belle Grove in 1789 by Captain Frances Conway, cousin of President James Madison. Later this 13-acre village would be blended back into Belle Grove. This black tea is a delectable infusion of sweet and flavorful notes of almond and caramelized pear. Contains Caffeine.

Special Notes for Afternoon Tea at Belle Grove Plantation

While we enjoy sharing our home with you, we are not able to accommodate children under 5 years of age at our teas.
Dress for our afternoon tea is up to you. We allow casual to formal. Tea Hats are very popular and we enjoy sharing them through our social media.

Belle Grove Plantation is a historic site and does offer handicap access to the mansion. We request that you please let us know one week in advance of your need, so we can move our portable ramp in place for you. Less than a weeks’ notice or no request made, and the ramp will not be in place.

We are sorry, but we do charge for each person attending with food and tea for each person. We do not allow sharing one Afternoon Tea for more than one person. We do not allow outside food or drinks.
