Since 1773, the mulberry tree continued to grow and thrive in the shadow of the historic mansion. Reach towering heights and with a base larger than two arm’s length in distance, the mulberry tree stood as a sentinel watching over the families of Belle Grove and witnessing history of both Belle Grove and America.

In 2013, after realizing the mulberry tree was no longer living and being too close to the historic mansion, the decision was made to take it down. Knowing the history, it had witness, the wood was saved and given to a Virginia Woodworker, John Crosson of Fredericksburg, Virginia to transform it into a Colonial cabinet that now graces the library in the mansion.
